Avon is a ski town up near Beaver Creek Ski Resort. I was up there in May of 2019 and the weather was a pure representation of Colorado. In the morning it would be gorgeous warm and sunny, then come the evening it would get cloudy, rainy, and snowy. Thankfully I was able to get out when there was some sunlight to create the photo above. Now in order to focus on the foreground and have everything else blurry you need to set your camera to a lower f stop. With a lower f stop, the aperture (the width of the opening in the lens) is wider than when you have a higher f-number. This causes less of the frame to be in focus. This setting is perfect for portraits. You can read more about how the f-number here. With the photo above I just wanted the contrast of the bright yellow flower to be the only item in focus, make the rest of the frame darker.

This photo was taken in the evening. You can kind of tell because the water is rippling because of the wind and I did not include much of the sky due to the overcast of clouds. One of the best tips I got from a photographer was to have a leading line from the corner of the frame up into the interesting portion of the photograph. These rocks made a perfect leading line for me. The sky is cropped out because it was just flat grey clouds. While some storm clouds can add a lot of texture and emotion into a picture, flat textureless clouds do not add much unless it fits the aesthetic you are looking for. Since the clouds did not fit what I was looking for I cut them out while trying to give enough room for the picture to breath on the top end.
