The Great Sand Dunes are the weirdest thing I have ever seen in Colorado. With the mix of sand, water, and mountains this place has it all. Located an hour outside of Alamosa, Colorado the Sand Dunes are a sight to see and a photographers' playground. All the pictures but the last two were taken in the early morning. This is because after a whole day's worth of people walking around it is hard to get any uninterrupted sand to take pictures. So my Dad and I woke up early to work with the morning light and hopefully be the first people to the dunes. Also when we were there it was always stormy or cloudy in the afternoons or evenings giving no ability to take pictures for sunset.

This photo above was taken on the first day of being at the sand dunes. We got there for sunset and we were greeted with wind, clouds, and not a lot of great shots. However the clouds shown here i found fascinating. It looks like it was painted and brings such a dark heavy emotion to the picture which I enjoy. This is a big tip for shooting at the dunes, take as little gear as possible outside the car if it is windy. The wind will get sand in EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING! I still have sand in my tripod to this day! But it was all worth it.
Below is a photo outside of the national park just off the main road. There is not a lot of light pollution around Alamosa which makes for great stars if the sky is clear! Luckily for us, the clouds gave us some space to work with because earlier that day the sky was completely clouded over.
